The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are among the most prestigious educational institutions in India. Every year, hundreds of thousands of students take the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains, followed by JEE Advanced, with the hope of securing a spot at one of these esteemed institutes. While only a few thousand make it, the reward is substantial. IITs offer not only exceptional academic faculty but also serve as a gateway to job opportunities with some of the world’s biggest companies.
However, early reports in the first quarter of the financial year suggested that IITs were facing challenges in placing students for jobs. Despite efforts to attract more recruiters, placements at the older IITs were reportedly struggling. After more than four months of final placements (2023-24) at established IITs in Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Madras, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, and Varanasi, securing positions for students in such a competitive job market proved to be a formidable task.
Despite these initial concerns, the final placement records of 2024-25 have disproved these claims. According to a TNN report, IITs have seen a surge in domestic job offers, with companies offering substantial salary packages to attract top-tier candidates. This rise in recruitment underscores the enduring value and reputation of an IIT degree in the global job market.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the placement performance of our IITs in 2024.

IIT Placement Process: A Broad Overview
The IIT placement process is coordinated by each institute’s Placement Cell, consisting of faculty and student volunteers who facilitate interactions between companies and students. The Placement Cell ensures students are well-prepared through career counseling, mock interviews, resume workshops, and other preparatory activities. The process involves multiple rounds: aptitude tests, technical interviews, HR interviews, and sometimes group discussions or case studies.
Aptitude tests evaluate problem-solving, logical reasoning, and mathematical skills, while technical interviews assess the depth of knowledge in core subjects. HR interviews focus on interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and alignment with company culture. Some companies may include group discussions or case studies to test communication and problem-solving abilities in collaborative settings.
The placement season typically runs from December to May, with exact dates varying across IIT campuses. It is designed to handle the increasing number of companies and student needs. The placement process kicks off with Pre-Placement Talks (PPTs), where companies present their operations, job roles, and qualifications. These talks provide students with insights into company culture and expectations, helping them tailor their interview preparation.
The IIT placement process aims to match students’ skills with the right job opportunities, ensuring a smooth transition from education to career.
