“We’re going to be there”: Jerry Jones has expressed a strong opinion on the future of NFL Christmas Day games

Jerry Jones is an 82-year-old owner of an NFL team, with a very outspoken and publicized opinion on most issues concerning professional football. Therefore, he is one of the most popular figures in the league. The league has entered into a three-year agreement with Netflix. Netflix will now have the exclusive rights to the Christmas Day doubleheader in 2024. The game will be exclusively available to Netflix subscribers free of charge. Despite Christmas falling on a Wednesday this year, the league hopes to schedule games annually.

Jerry Jones on Christmas Day NFL games

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in an interview with KRLD-FM that the NFL will not return the holiday to Santa Claus anytime soon. “Christmas Day is Christmas Day and it doesn’t wait around for what day it’s on. We want to be there on Christmas Day,” Jones said via Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports. “I would think the future is whatever day it’s on, we’re going to be there on Christmas.”

In 2025, the NFL will probably plan for Christmas on a Thursday because of its regular season games on Thursday nights, but 2029 may be a problem because the holiday falls on a Tuesday. The Pittsburgh Steelers play the Kansas City Chiefs in the first of two holiday games, while the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans play in a special holiday set, all playing their Week 16 games on Saturday.
Houston native Beyoncé will likely headline at the halftime of the Texans-Ravens game in NRG Stadium. Traditionally, the NBA dominates Christmas Day with multiple games on Christmas Day, but that might not be so again with some of the NBA marquee teams that compete now with the NFL in light of the latter’s being accustomed to hosting its matches on Christmas Day.
Netflix also acquired the streaming rights to at least one holiday game in 2025 and 2026, under the terms of the multiyear deal between the league. “Last year, we decided to take a big bet on live – tapping into massive fandoms across comedy, reality TV, sports and more,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said in a news release in May shortly after the Christmas Day package of games was announced.
“There are no live annual events, sports or otherwise, that compare with the audiences NFL football attracts. We’re so excited that the NFL’s Christmas Day games will be only on Netflix.” However, Netflix is hosting Christmas Day games amid pressure from subscribers experiencing live stream issues during the recent Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight.

This season’s Christmas doubleheader lands on a Wednesday, where all four teams play on Saturday. The turnaround comes fast with the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers, in the early afternoon; and the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans, in the late afternoon.
