The Tennessee Titans, who have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, fired general manager Ran Carthon on Tuesday after two seasons. Carthon was the franchise’s first Black general manager; he joined the team in January 2023. Carthon became the fifth GM of the Titans since the franchise moved to Nashville in 1997. In 2024, after the Titans fired previous general manager Jon Robinson midway through the season, he helped the Titans hire a new coach, Brian Callahan. Carthon previously served as a scout and personnel executive for the Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco 49ers.

Carthon made Tennessee among the NFL’s biggest spenders last offseason and signed talents like cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, wide receiver Calvin Ridley, center Lloyd Cushenberry and running back Tony Pollard.
Tennessee controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk will reportedly hire a new GM to help the franchise decide what to do with its fourth overall No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. The new GM will be assisted by Chad Brinker, president of football operations. Strunk fired previous coach Mike Vrabel and empowered Carthon to lead the search for the next coach, who ended up being Callahan.
“I think the general manager position is unique to their respective organizations,” Brinker shared in the team’s website. “This particular job, what we’ll be looking for is someone who has spent their career as a scout, is a top-flight, top-level evaluator who has spent the majority of their career projecting college players to the National Football League, they’ve had a major hand in setting the draft board in preferably a consistent, winning organization, and you can see their fingerprints all over the roster.”
The Titans’ president and CEO Burke Nihill explained why Strunk fired Carthon and noted that Carthon was hired when they had a different description for the general manager job. He also revealed that the Titans currently need a GM who will work closely with the existing head coach. “Ran had very different circumstances over the last two years in terms of his role,” Nihill said. “At the end of the day, this is a results-oriented business. Amy’s assessment is we needed to make a change.”
“It’s impossible to ignore that our football team hasn’t improved over the past two years,” Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement released by the team. “I am deeply disappointed in our poor win-loss record during this period.”
NFl journalist Justin M claims that Carthon wasn’t ready to be a GM but Stun hired him nevertheless.
“Former #Titans HC Mike Vrabel cautioned Amy Adams Strunk that Ran Carthon wasn’t ready to be a GM. She hired him anyways. Vrabel was right. She fired Vrabel & chose Carthon. Now she fires Carthon a calendar year later,” he wrote on X.
Colorado coach Deion Sanders, whose son Shedeur Sanders is a top contender when the Titans select first overall in April, reacted to the Titans’ announcement on X, posting, “Wow!”
