Kansas City International Airport has been closed due to ice accumulation, and the Chiefs are stuck on the tarmac as they were set to leave for Denver on Saturday. The airport’s official Twitter account informed passengers of the closure. Kansas City is preparing for a major storm with heavy snowfall expected on Sunday, and conditions are already deteriorating. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning and a blizzard warning across several counties from 3 a.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday.

Kansas City International Airport, which had been scheduled to host the Chiefs’ Week 18 game against the Broncos, was closed because of ice accumulation and winter weather. The Chiefs were scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m. MT, but were delayed because of the closure.
The airport’s official Twitter account has announced a flight halt. “Saturday 2:50pm Update – Due to rapid ice accumulation, the airfield at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is currently closed to flight operations,” the statement read. “Check with your airline for specific flight information. Additional status updates to follow.”
There was a brief break between the line of ice that had glazed Kansas City and the arrival of heavy snow, which was expected to last all of Sunday. That provided enough time to de-ice the plane, clear the runway and get the Chiefs off the ground.
CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson confirmed that the Chiefs are expected to take off despite delays and weather concerns, as the plane has been de-iced and there is optimism that they will be able to take off soon. “Due to the airport being closed, Chiefs plane stranded as of now. They were set to arrive at 3. #Chiefs”, she wrote.
Kansas City’s city manager, Brian David Platt, announced that the airport was scheduled to reopen and resume normal operations after just under a three-hour closure.“The runways at the Kansas City Airport will reopen and resume normal operations in about 30 minutes”, he wrote.
Pete Sweeney of SB Nation’s Arrowhead Pride reported that the Chiefs were in the air shortly after the airport reopened, and they planned to leave earlier due to weather concerns, but their plane arrived too late.“I’m told the Chiefs are in the air”, he wrote.

With the snow turning into freezing rain, residents are told to stay home until the storm passes. The Chiefs (15-1) visit the Broncos (9-7) at 4:25 p.m. ET, but Kansas City’s key starters sit in Denver ahead of the postseason, as the AFC’s No. 1 seed is a done deal.
