With the demise of the legendary actor Irrfan Khan on April 29, 2020, the Indian film industry has lost a precious gem. As it’s the actor’s birth anniversary on this day, January 7, let’s take a throwback look at when Irffan Khan’s close friend and neighbour revealed that he remained attached to his roots.
In an earlier interview with Pinkvilla, Ziaullah, deeply moved by the loss, shared an emotional verse: ‘Maut Hai Uski Zaman Jiska Afsoos Kare, Yun Toh Duniya Main Sabhi Aaye Hai Marne Ke Liye!’ Reflecting on Irrfan’s nature, he described the actor as a simple, grounded individual who never carried the airs of stardom. “He was just another neighbor for us,” Ziaullah noted.
Irrfan remained deeply attached to his roots. “Whenever he visited Jaipur, he would meet neighbors, inquire about their well-being, and even talk about patangbazi (kite flying),” Ziaullah recalled. “He would turn into a kid while flying kites, excitedly talking about victories and defeats. As a child, he even kept his kites by his bed before sleeping.”
The neighbors also admired Irrfan’s humility and generosity. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he contributed funds to help the underprivileged but insisted on maintaining anonymity. “His only condition was that no one should know he had helped. For their family, what mattered most was providing relief, not recognition,” Ziaullah revealed.
Irrfan’s visits brought joy and energy to Krishna Colony, especially during Makar Sankranti. “Every January 14, he would try to come back to Jaipur, spending time with his family and flying kites with friends. His presence added positivity to the entire neighborhood,” Ziaullah shared.
The pain of his passing was compounded by the fact that Irrfan died just four days after losing his mother. Ziaullah revealed how close the actor was to her: “He would rush home whenever his ammi was unwell, no matter how short the visit. His love for her was unshakable.”
