Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, a respected figure in Kansas City, is looking for a second opportunity as an NFL head coach. Recently, Spagnuolo compared the Broncos quarterback, Bo Nix, to one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, Josh Allen, and said there are some similarities between Nix and Allen as runners.

Steve Spagnuolo, Chiefs’ defensive coordinator, compared Bo Nix’s game to that of one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, Josh Allen, as they prepare to face the Denver Broncos for the second time. “This might sound really shocking, but when he tucks it and runs, I get visions of Josh Allen,” Spagnuolo said Friday. “He can go, and he’s a pretty good sized guy too … There’s that whole feature. We’ve got to get better at containing, controlling us with their feet.”
Nix has been an effective scrambler for the Broncos this season. He has proven himself versatile in eluding sacks and turning plays into excellent 21-yard scrambles. His performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in which he showed his talents, sealed his deal.
Nix has shown that he can throw strong on the run, even on plays that are not run to convert first downs. Against the Cincinnati Bengals during a game where the Broncos played the Bengals, Nix sprinted away from the pressure, but in his wake was the Cincinnati Bengals’s pocket. Through Next Gen Stats, he has one of the most completions on the run this season.
Nix has rushed for 385 yards and four touchdowns in his rookie season, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. However, he is not exactly comparable to Allen, one of the best rushing quarterbacks in the NFL, who has rushed for 500 yards in all but one season.
Allen has established himself with 448 yards and five touchdowns in eight games against Chiefs defensive coordinator Spagnuolo. That Week 11 Bills-Chiefs matchup ended in his favor when Allen sealed the win on a 26-yard rushing touchdown. Like Nix, Allen’s legs have been impressive, but Allen is in a different stratosphere in terms of dual threat.
Spagnuolo has expressed his desire for another opportunity as the team prepares for the upcoming playoffs. Spagnuolo, highly regarded in Kansas City, has played a significant role in the team’s two consecutive Super Bowl titles. Asked if he would ever want a shot as a head coach, he said: ‘I’ll deal with that later. The answer is yes but right now, it’s all about Denver (Chiefs play the Broncos on Sunday). I’ll let all of that take care of itself.”

Spagnuolo’s comments are likely to alert teams as several NFL vacancies are expected in the offseason. However, there is minimal chance of an opening at Kansas City, as head coach Andy Reid signed a new five-year deal last year.
