Former Shark Tank India investor Radhika Gupta recently opened up about her early challenges in the business world during a conversation with Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan on her podcast. Gupta shared her unique strategy to overcome age-related biases: “In business, you are investing money, and people give you money if you have some grey hair, are bald, or look a bit older. People trust you with those kinds of looks. So I had to struggle with that because I was quite young when I started my business. I started wearing sarees to look older.”
Having grown up abroad, Gupta was not accustomed to wearing sarees. “I have never worn sarees. Now I only wear sarees. But I started wearing a saree to look older so that people take me seriously. But over time, I have realized if you have confidence and your work is good, then people throw gender, age out of the window.”
Gupta acknowledged that the journey was not without its insecurities. “It has taken time. But there are still moments of insecurities, but I am a lot better now.”
Discussing the often elusive concept of work-life balance, Gupta revealed, “There is very little ‘me’ time, and people keep asking me about work-life balance, and I don’t understand this concept. My life is chaos, but I have learned to find happiness in this chaos.”
She emphasized the importance of self-compassion: “I have learned not to be hard on yourself because women are judged so much for everything. So take it easy, be kind to yourself. Make a few mistakes and enjoy the process thoroughly.”
Radhika Gupta’s career journey is a testament to resilience and adaptability. As one of the few women in the investment world, she has paved her way through innovative thinking and sheer determination, inspiring many young entrepreneurs in the process.
