Patrick Mahomes, the NFL’s face, is undoubtedly one of the most identified quarterbacks in the game. Since being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, Mahomes has led the team to unprecedented heights, with multiple AFC Championship appearances and a Super Bowl win in 2020. But does the city of Kansas City deserve all the praise for “embracing” him, or is it possible that Mahomes is the one who lucked out by landing in a team with so much potential?
Mahomes’s “Gratitude”- But Is He the One Getting the Benefit?
Going all the way back in 2019, Mahomes stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to express his appreciation towards Kansas City saying that it is “definitely crazy” but at the same time, you love it. Kansas City is an incredible city, and they truly embraced me coming here;“It’s definitely crazy, but at the same time, you love it. Kansas City is such an amazing city and they’ve really embraced me coming there. I love being there. I love being a part of the community and part of that organization,” Patrick Mahomes said.
Yes, Kansas City showed Mahomes love when he first arrived, but let’s not forget that Mahomes was a game-changer from the moment he stepped on the field. Easier said than done is how the city welcomed him. It’s impossible not to notice that Mahomes came in with a championship mindset which the Chiefs desperately needed. And that was a reality check for years – they really needed it.
Was Mahomes the reason why he elevated the Chiefs? Was it the support from the Chiefs that shaped Mahomes into the superstar that is today?
The “Champ Stamp” Moment – A Fan’s Tribute or Over-the-Top Obsession?
He said, on the same Jimmy Kimmel Live show: Mahomes was touched when a fan flashed his “Champ stamp” on his lower back, giving the tattoo of Mahomes’ potential for greatness by possibly leading the team there. Mahomes had, at the time, yet to win a Super Bowl. He had lost that 2018 AFC Championship game. So, a premature tribute or some seriously great foresight? Either way, Mahomes thanked the fan – but perhaps it was the team, the coaching, and the surrounding talent that turned Mahomes into the champion he would eventually become.
The Chiefs eventually won three Super Bowls in just seven years. But looking back, did Mahomes need the city of Kansas City to thrive, or did the city simply benefit from having one of the most talented quarterbacks in NFL history?
Settling Down in Kansas City – A Match Made in Football Heaven?
In 2018, Mahomes and his spouse Brittany bought their first home within Kansas City, and upgraded to a large 4,300 square feet building by 2019. Mahomes even said on record that he and the wife Brittany intend to stick in Kansas for the rest of 20 years ahead. However, the matter of concern here is does Kansas City get lucky getting Mahomes, or that Mahomes just picked on the right place to land?
Mahomes made a choice for the rest of his life by staying with the Chiefs, a team with incredible fans, a legendary coach, and a strong organizational structure. This was the perfect marriage between Mahomes and the needs of the team.
The Real Question: Did Kansas City “Embrace” Patrick Mahomes, or Was It the Other Way Around?
While Mahomes definitely gives a nod to the good people of Kansas City for their support, it’s not forgotten that Mahomes was a generational talent long before he ever set foot in Kansas. Even though he has been an incredible ambassador for the city, the truth is that he was always going to be a great player, and the Chiefs were just lucky to get him.
Kansas City cannot deny the advantages it benefits from with Mahomes there, but let’s not forget – Mahomes is what transformed the Chiefs from an almost competitive team to perennial contenders for the Super Bowl. The true “embrace” may have been one from Mahomes himself when he saw that his potential career could be something for a city starving to finally win.
