Exploring Guldanda in Kashmir; India’s own Mini Switzerland

Guldanda is one of the lesser-known Kashmiri beauties. The beautiful town, set in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, is becoming popular day by day as a latest winter wonderland. The place has been attracting a large number of tourists from all over soon after the renovation of the Bhaderwah-Basholi-Pathankot National Highway. Given the current scenario, more visitors are now able to visit this part of Kashmir which is relatively unexplored but more beautiful.
New snow sensation
The place is situated at an altitude of nearly 10,000 ft and it recently received heavy snowfall. It soon turned into a snowland attracting people from all over. The place has now become a perfect destination for snow lovers from across the country.
The success of Guldanda as a prime tourist destination and winter hotspot can be seen in the record-breaking number of visitors arriving every year. In 2024 alone, nearly 5 lakh tourists visited various parts of Bhaderwah, with many flocking to the renowned Guldanda meadow. The Publicity Officer of the Bhaderwah Development Authority (BDA), Aamir Rafique, shared that the region’s popularity has surged because of the recent snowfall. People are calling it “India’s Mini Switzerland.”
For travellers, the attraction of Guldanda lies in its pristine, snow-covered terrain that offers a perfect winter retreat. The meadow’s breathtaking winter landscape, with up to four feet of snow in certain spots, has been a major attraction, drawing people from far and wide. Visitors have been thrilled to explore the snowy surroundings and engage in activities such as snowboarding, skiing, and simply enjoying the serene beauty of nature.
As Guldanda continues to gain prominence, Bhaderwah is gradually evolving into a year-round tourist destination, catering not only to winter tourism but also to other seasonal visitors. The surge in visitors has brought economic opportunities to the local population, creating jobs and boosting local businesses.

Snowfall

Although the snowfall caused temporary road closures, which initially hindered access to the area, the swift action of the administration and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) ensured that the Bhaderwah-Basholi-Pathankot highway was cleared and reopened for visitors.
This has further ensured that tourists can continue to enjoy the beauty of Guldanda and other nearby attractions, contributing to the region’s growing reputation as a must-visit spot for travelers looking for an off-the-beaten-path snowy escape in India.
