Today marks the birth anniversary of legendary Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, fondly known as ‘Tiger Pataudi’. The cricketer, who held the title of Nawab of Pataudi, is remembered not only for his cricketing achievements but also for his iconic marriage to Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore, a union that captivated the media and became a symbol of love and defiance.
Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Sharmila Tagore’s romance blossomed over the years, leading to their wedding on December 27, 1968. Their marriage, an interfaith union during a time when such relationships were rare and controversial, drew significant attention.
Sharmila embraced Islam and changed her name to Ayesha, a decision that faced significant opposition from both families. Sharmila, in earlier interviews, opened up about the pressures and threats her family received, including warnings that they would be shot if she went ahead with the marriage.
Despite the odds, the couple remained deeply in love, and their marriage lasted for 43 years, until Pataudi’s passing in 2011. They have three children: Saif Ali Khan, Saba Pataudi, and Soha Ali Khan, all of whom continue to carry forward the legacy of their iconic parents.
To mark their wedding anniversary, Saba Pataudi recently shared an emotional post on social media, recalling sweet memories of her parents’ relationship. She wrote fondly about how, every year, she would remind her father of their anniversary, only to have Mansoor pretend to forget. He would then sneak away to surprise Sharmila with flowers, a gesture that continued through the years. Saba expressed her longing for those moments, writing, “I would wake up every morning, go down to wish them. Remind Abba as our tradition, it was their anniversary! He’d wink at me and say, is it today?? Lol… and go wish Amma, secretly having (or maybe) after organizing some flowers for her! Wish those days were here still…but life moves on and memories live in our hearts forever.”
Saba shared another post of her parents wedding anniversary and post read, “Happy Anniversary
Abba n Amma….. You both were the best! Miss reminding Abba, who I think pretended to forget;) it’s their Anniversary! And who’d then promptly wish her n get some flowers
to surprise her! I guess mostly to let me believe I’d been the reminder
They were MEANT TO BE. Good memories….miss it as I was the one home with both while my siblings had already moved to Mumbai or were studying abroad for most of the time. Just them …n me.”
