In a significant move to enhance India’s appeal as an international education hub, the Ministry of Home Affairs has launched two new visa categories: the ‘e-student visa’ and the ‘e-student-x visa.’ These visas aim to streamline the process for foreign students pursuing higher education in India and their accompanying dependents. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s efforts to promote the Study in India (SII) program.
The visa categories: International students who have registered on the SII portal are now eligible to apply for the e-student visa, which is intended for students enrolled in accredited undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, or certificate programs in India. Further, the e-student-x visa is available to dependents of e-student visa holders, who are traveling with these students. With a maximum validity length of five years and the option for an extension within India, both visa categories allow entry through any authorized immigration checkpoint.

Streamlining admission via the SII portal: The Study in India (SII) portal will serve as a one-stop platform to simplify the admission process for international students. Students must first register on the SII portal to get admission to a partner university. After this, they can move further to apply for the new e-visas. A unique SII ID will be generated during registration in the portal, which will serve as an essential identification number for visa applications. Students can apply for their visa on the official Indian visa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in) after being offered admission.
Educational opportunities: Under the direction of the Ministry of Education, the SII program offers more than 8,000 courses in a wide variety of subjects and works with more than 600 Indian universities. Engineering, administration, the arts, sciences, and specialized disciplines like yoga and Buddhist studies are among them. Undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and certification programs are all available to students, offering a wide range of options to satisfy different academic goals.
SII Portal: The SII portal simplifies the application process. Students can register by providing their name, country, birthdate, email address, and mobile number. After registering, they can log in using their email address or SII ID to fill out the online application form. With its user-friendly interface, the platform connects students to esteemed Indian universities, ensuring a smooth and seamless experience.
