The NFL world is buzzing, and not in a good way. Diontae Johnson, once the wide receiver that many thought had real potential, has been released by the Baltimore Ravens. Fallout and confusion for both fans and analysts abound; so what led to this shocking move and what is next for Johnson? Let’s dive into the drama.

Why Did the Ravens Cut Ties with Johnson?

Johnson’s exit didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. The writing was on the wall for weeks. The trouble started when Johnson refused to play in the Ravens’ Week 13 matchup against the Eagles, citing undisclosed reasons. His defiance reportedly continued into Weeks 14 and 15, causing tensions to boil over within the organization.
Finally, the Ravens did it; on December 21, the team waived the 28-year-old receiver. The decision has been under debate all over the league, some saying it was a necessity while others ask if the Ravens acted too hastily.

Is it A Market Frenzy for Johnson?

Despite his controversial departure, however, Johnson may not be free for long. NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed today that several top-tier teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, and even his old team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, are reportedly interested in the talented wide receiver.
Rapoport reports:
“I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he ended up getting claimed. A couple of teams to watch for are the Chargers who have not John Harbaugh but Jim Harbaugh, the Chiefs, and maybe his old team the Pittsburgh Steelers as well.”

If this is actually the case, it can create a bidding war situation where teams will try to outdo one another in offering the best deals to secure Johnson’s service. But will his baggage scare them off?

Critics are divided over Johnson’s future

However, while Rapoport sees potential in Johnson getting drafted, there are others who believe the opposite. ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler drew a terrible image of what happened: possibly tanking his free agency market value due to Baltimore.
Fowler posted a few days ago:
“No other way around it: Diontae Johnson lit millions on fire. Was set to be a top-25 free agent before the issues in Baltimore.”
The worry is that teams might now see Johnson as a liability—a player unwilling to cooperate with management.

What’s Next for Johnson?

Johnson’s fate now hangs in the balance. Will he be scooped up by a Super Bowl contender like the Chiefs or Chargers? Or will his reputation take a hit, leaving him in NFL limbo?
For fans, it’s a rollercoaster situation. Many hope Johnson will have a fresh start on his hands with a team that is willing to let the recent drama slide over his head. Others are saying this marks the start of a career downturn for the once-great wideout.
Only time will tell if Johnson will ever turn things around. For now, one thing is pretty certain: his next move might define his NFL legacy.
