Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson, who’s wrapping up his 12th season with the NFL has no retirement plans on the horizon, he confirmed recently. Johnson told reporters on Saturday he’s “definitely not retiring” after the Super Bowl whether they “win or lose” against the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson even admitted that during the preseason he physically felt like he could play until he was 40, but realistically he could play for another two to three years.
Lane Johnson Dismisses Retirement Rumours Ahead Of Super Bowl
“I’m definitely not retiring after this game, win or lose,” Johnson said.”I’m definitely playing next year. That’s really how you take it I guess when you get up in age, is take it one year at a time. But physically, I feel a lot better than I have the past, probably, couple years. I feel really good. For being this late in the year, it’s usually not like that. I’m thankful. We’ve got a good team here to help us with all that.”
Johnson, who will turn 35 in May, has proven that he is still performing at a high level. Since turning 30, he has only missed making a first or second All-Pro team once, when he was sidelined for nine games in the 2020 season. Currently, he is riding a three-year streak of Pro Bowl selections that matches his earlier run from 2017 to 2019.
This season, Johnson played a crucial role on the offensive line, contributing to Saquon Barkley’s achievement of 2,000 rushing yards. This milestone, which is only the ninth in NFL history, highlights that success in the trenches is just as vital to the accomplishment as Barkley’s talent.
Johnson is currently busy preparing to face off with the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LVII. “We didn’t finish what we started a couple years ago,” he said. “We have a big chance to go play well and do something special. That’s on our mind but, really, for me, I don’t try to get caught up in the emotions of it. I just see it as something in the way and we’ve got to find a way to get it out of our way.”
