As 2025 begins, travellers must prepare for significant changes to identification and entry requirements that could impact domestic and international trips. These updates aim to enhance security and streamline immigration processes but may catch some unprepared.
Real ID: Your domestic travel essential
Starting May 2025, US travellers will need a Real ID or an acceptable alternative, like a passport, to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities. The Real ID is distinguishable by a star or flag symbol on state-issued driver’s licenses or IDs, as defined by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
At airports, licenses lacking these marks will no longer be accepted as identification, which could result in passengers who are ill-prepared being grounded. The regulation was originally supposed to be implemented sooner, but the epidemic caused delays. It is recommended that travellers update their identification documents to Real ID-compliant versions well in advance of the deadline.

Entering the UK: ETA requirements
Americans traveling to the UK for a maximum of six months are needed to register for the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme starting on January 8, 2025. Those traveling for business, education, or pleasure are subject to the ETA, which costs about $13. The ETA expedites entry and improves border security since it is valid for two years after approval.
Seema Malhotra, the UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship, emphasizes, “The global rollout of ETA demonstrates our commitment to leveraging technology for robust and modernized immigration.”
Traveling to Europe: ETIAS mandate
Europe will introduce the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in May 2025 after several delays. Travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., must complete an application costing about $7. The ETIAS approval process may take days or weeks, so early applications are advised.
Approved ETIAS permits are valid for up to three years or until the traveler’s passport expires. However, travelers must ensure their passports have at least three months of validity beyond their travel date and are no older than a decade.

Travel adviser Sara Russell highlights the risks of expired or nearly expired documents: “Many travelers are unaware of passport requirements, leading to canceled plans or denied boarding at airports.”
