Born in Melakattu village near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District, Narayanan’s foray into aerospace engineering began with a stellar academic record. He earned his M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1989, graduating at the top of his class and earning a silver medal. His passion for innovation led him to pursue a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the same institution, which he completed in 2001.
Narayanan’s deep focus on cryogenic propulsion during his studies laid the groundwork for his future contributions to India’s space programme. His rigorous training at IIT Kharagpur equipped him with the expertise to tackle some of the most complex challenges in rocket propulsion.

Building a Career in Propulsion Technology

Narayanan began his career at ISRO, joining the Cryogenic Propulsion division at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). Early in his journey, he made significant strides in advancing cryogenic technology—a critical element for India’s space missions.
He also worked on solid propulsion systems for sounding rockets, the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV), and the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) during his tenure at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), gaining extensive experience in various propulsion technologies.

Steering the Propulsion Powerhouse: Leadership at ISRO’s LPSC

Currently serving as the Director of LPSC in Valiamala, Narayanan has played a key role in driving ISRO’s propulsion technology to new heights. Over the past five years, he has overseen the development of 164 liquid propulsion systems for 41 launch vehicle missions and 31 spacecraft missions. His leadership has also been instrumental in advancing liquid, semi-cryogenic, and cryogenic propulsion stages for various missions.
In addition to his technical expertise, Narayanan has led major R&D initiatives and spearheaded infrastructure expansions in the propulsion sector, ensuring ISRO’s readiness for future challenges.

Narayan’s Key Contributions and Recognitions: Rocket-worthy Highlights

Among his many achievements, Narayanan’s development of the CE20 cryogenic engine for GSLV Mk III stands out. This critical engine has enabled ISRO to undertake heavier payload missions, including the Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan programmes. His work also extends to significant projects such as the Aditya spacecraft and GSLV Mk III missions.
Narayanan’s contributions have earned him prestigious awards, including the Shri Award from the Astronautical Society of India and the Distinguished Alumni Award from IIT Kharagpur, reflecting his commitment to advancing India’s space capabilities.
