The New England Patriots are scheduled to interview former linebacker Mike Vrabel for their head coaching job on Thursday, NFL Media first reported. Vrabel, who was the Titans’ head coach from 2018 to 2023, is one of the top candidates in this hiring hunt and an option the Patriots were expected to go for since firing Jerod Mayo on Sunday.
Mike Vrabel Set to Interview for Patriots Head Coaching Role
The New England Patriots are set to interview a familiar face as part of their search for a new head coach. Former Tennessee Titans coach and Patriots legend Mike Vrabel is scheduled to meet with the organization on Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. This move has sparked excitement among fans, given Vrabel’s deep-rooted connection with the franchise.
Vrabel, 49, etched his name in Patriots history during his tenure as a linebacker from 2001 to 2008. A three-time Super Bowl champion, he was pivotal in New England’s dominance during that era. His standout 2007 season earned him Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors, and he was inducted into the Patriots’ Hall of Fame.
Following his departure from the Titans in 2023, Vrabel took on a consulting role with the Cleveland Browns for the 2024 season. During his six years as Tennessee’s head coach, Vrabel amassed a 54-45 record and led the team to three playoff appearances. However, back-to-back losing seasons marked the end of his tenure. Before his time with the Titans, he honed his coaching skills with the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Houston Texans, earning respect across the NFL coaching landscape.
The Patriots are not the only team eyeing Vrabel. He is also set to interview with the Chicago Bears and could become a target for the Las Vegas Raiders, now co-owned by Tom Brady, following their dismissal of head coach Antonio Pierce. His recent interview with the New York Jets underscores his status as one of the most sought-after names in the market.
New England’s head coaching vacancy presents a unique opportunity. While the team is in a rebuilding phase, rookie quarterback Drake Maye showed significant promise in 2024 despite challenges such as a lackluster offensive line and limited offensive weapons. The Patriots also hold the No. 4 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, allowing them to add a top-tier talent like two-way star Travis Hunter or offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr.

Securing Vrabel could bring a blend of familiarity and fresh energy to a team eager to reclaim its former glory. With his proven leadership and Patriots legacy, Vrabel stands out as a compelling candidate to lead New England into a new era.
