By February 2025, electric trains are expected to begin operations in Tripura, marking the start of a transformative shift in the region’s transportation. This development follows the completion of a major electrification project in the northeastern state, moving away from the reliance on diesel engines. With a budget of INR 46 crore, the project aims to integrate Tripura into the national railway network, enhancing connectivity and reducing environmental impact.
In order to supply electricity to the railway’s electric transmission lines before the intended completion date, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) is all geared up. North Eastern Railways (NFR) officials declared that the electrification project from Badarpur to Agartala, which passes via Dharmanagar, was already complete. It is anticipated that this development would open the door to a state railway service that is more contemporary and efficient.
Nirupam Guha, Assistant General Manager (Transmission) of TSECL, detailed the progress of the project, noting that three traction power substations have been erected across the state: one in Kumarghat (Unakoti district), another in Teliamura (Khowai district), and the third in Udaipur (Gomati district). The Kumarghat substation was completed in March of the previous year, while the Udaipur substation is expected to be operational by the end of this month. The Teliamura substation is on track to be completed by February, ensuring that all necessary infrastructure is in place for electrification.

TSECL will be prepared to energize the railway electric transmission line that connects Dharmanagar to Agartala and beyond once the three traction substations are completely functional. For each substation, the Railways has asked for a daily supply of 5 MW of electricity, with the possibility of an increase if necessary. The successful functioning of electric trains, which are anticipated to be quicker and more efficient than their diesel counterparts, depends on this energy availability.
Guha emphasised the project’s broader implications, stating, “Once this project is completed, more advanced and faster trains will be introduced in the northeastern state. It will play a crucial role in boosting infrastructure and the economic growth of the state.”

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, confirmed the successful completion of electrification work from Badarpur to Agartala, excluding the hilly Lumding-Badarpur section. Efforts are underway to expedite the electrification of this remaining stretch to ensure seamless connectivity.
The upcoming electric train services in Tripura represent a significant step toward modernizing the state’s transportation network, promising to enhance travel efficiency and contribute to the region’s economic development.
