The Chargers are going to sign running back Ezekiel Elliott, who was waived by the Cowboys last week. Elliott, who ended the season with 74 carries for 226 yards and three touchdowns, will join the team’s practice squad. He played his first seven NFL seasons with the Cowboys and returned this offseason after spending 2023 with the Patriots.

The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to sign running back Ezekiel Elliott, who was released by the Dallas Cowboys in the regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders. Elliott requested his release, marking the second time in three seasons that the Cowboys have released a veteran running back.
A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Elliott was a star for the Cowboys after being taken with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. He led the NFL in carries and rushing yards in two of his first three seasons, amassing 322 carries and 15 touchdowns. Elliott, who was released by the Cowboys following the 2022 season, was signed by the New England Patriots. He had 955 yards and five touchdowns with the Patriots before signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys. In 2024, Elliott was a backup to Rico Dowdle, posting career-lows in rushing and carries.
Elliott was released by the Cowboys on New Year’s Eve before their Week 18 game against the Washington Commanders. “Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster…” Owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. “As I have said many times previously, Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him and wish him the absolute best.”
Elliott received a considerable number of awards during his time with Ohio State. In 2014, he was officially named the Offensive MVP of both the 2015 Sugar Bowl and the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Due to Elliott’s success at the end of the 2014 season, he gained popularity for winning the 2015 Heisman Trophy award; however, Elliott eventually ended up placing eighth in the vote.
After a successful regular season in which he gained 1,672 yards and 19 touchdowns, Elliott was named the 2015 Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year, 2015 Ameche-Dayne Running Back of the Year, and was chosen as Unanimous First Team All-Big Ten. Alongside the annual rewards, he has also been announced as Big Ten Player of the Week twice through the 2015 season based on his performances, which were when he played Week 5 against Indiana and also in Week 13 against Michigan.

The Chargers will likely be including running back Elliott in the active roster as J.K. Dobbins‘ backup as Gus Edwards’ ankle is injured and play the Houston Texans in the wild-card round.
