Recently, Arunachal Pradesh’s Sela Pass, which is famed for its breathtaking winter landscapes, turned into a site of harrowing incidents when a group of tourists found themselves trapped at Sela Lake when the ice cracked beneath them.
The incident caught on video and widely circulated on social media, highlights the potential dangers of winter tourism in such regions.
The Sela Pass is one of the most popular and breathtakingly beautiful tourist spots in Arunachal Pradesh that manages to attract countless visitors during winters. Its snow-clad peaks and serene vistas during this season makes it worth exploring. Among its key attractions, the Sela Lake is its primary highlight, a pristine water body which often turns frozen during the colder months, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience the thrill of walking on its icy surface. However, such activities can be fraught with risks, as evidenced by the recent accident.
As per the reports, and as seen in the video widely circulated, four tourists, including two women, ventured onto the frozen surface of the lake to experience the thrill of walking on ice. However, their adventure took an ugly and dangerous turn, when the ice beneath them suddenly began to crack, sending them plunging into the frigid waters below. This shocking moment was caught on camera, showing the tourists’ panic and desperate calls for help.

Thanks to the quick-thinking bystanders, who ran for help with bamboo sticks, and sprang into action. Their timely intervention averted a potential tragedy, and they managed to pull the tourists out of the icy waters, and back to safety. Although the tourists escaped serious injuries, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions in such extreme environments.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, sharing the video on X (formerly Twitter), stressed the need for caution when visiting challenging terrains like Sela Pass. “Walk on frozen lakes with experienced people, drive carefully on slippery snow roads, and be aware of snow avalanches. Temperatures are freezing, so wear warm clothes and enjoy responsibly. Your safety is important,” Rijiju advised.
