MUMBAI: Former Assam cricketer Devajit Saikia will be the next secretary, while Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh‘s (CSCS) Prabhtej Singh Bhatia will be the next treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Both Saikia, who has been discharging the functions of the secretary since current ICC independent Chair Jay Shah’s exit from the BCCI, and Bhatia filed their nominations – they were the lone applicants for the two posts and thus are set to be elected unopposed in the BCCI’s Special General Meeting at the cricket body’s headquarters on Jan 12 in Mumbai.
TOI had reported on Jan 2 about the possibility of Saikia and Prabhtej being elected unopposed for the two important posts in the BCCI.
Saikia, who has been the Advocate General of Assam since May 2021, was the Joint Secretary of the BCCI since October 2022 and was appointed its interim secretary of the BCCI in December.
The former Assam wicketkeeper, who played in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy (for Under-23) and Ranji Trophy for Assam, played four first-class matches in 1990-91. He has played for the East Zone with former India captain Soutav Ganguly.
With the positions of secretary and treasurer vacant following Jay Shah’s move to the ICC as the chairman and Ashish Shelar taking over as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government, the BCCI needed to fill those two positions amongst their office-bearers.
Saikia will represent the Assam Cricket Association as per the draft electoral list issued by the electoral officer AK Jyoti. Prabhtej has been a member of the BCCI’s Apex Council and the Board’s disciplinary Committee in the past.
The Board will need to elect a new joint secretary to fill Saikia’s position.
Meanwhile, Jay Shah is likely to attend the BCCI’s SGM here as a ‘special invitee’ of the BCCI.
