Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson has become the NFL’s most prolific quarterback in the ground game by breaking Michael Vick‘s record for career rushing yards of 6,109 set in a game against the Houston Texans. Jackson, with seven seasons under his belt, has played in 41 games fewer than Vick. With a 6-yard run in the third quarter, Jackson set a record of 87 rushing yards on four carries, including a 48-yard touchdown run. He said the record wasn’t of particular importance to him before the season.

Lamar Jackson continued his winning ways for the third NFL MVP award, his second in a row, on Christmas Day as the Baltimore Ravens played the Houston Texans. Jackson, the star for the Ravens, scored two touchdowns and ran for another and threw another log on the Christmas fire for the league’s MVP voters. Jackson broke Michael Vick’s record for the most rushing yards all-time by a quarterback with a scramble up the middle for six yards in the third quarter.
Jackson needed 852 yards to top Norfolk State head coach Vick, and he had always wanted to break the record since August. But he said he wanted to win a Super Bowl more than anything. “I’m trying to get a Super Bowl,” Jackson said on “The Lounge” podcast. “If that record comes, so be it. But that’s not my goal. If it happens, I’m going to cherish it. Hopefully the record [wouldn’t] be broken for a long time from now, but it’s not my goal.”
Jackson is on his way to achieving his target with the Ravens, who showed tremendous performance at 11-5 against the Texans. His role has since been changed because of the signing of Derrick Henry as he is no longer leading in rush for the team in the first season since 2019. On the other hand, he is not concerned about changes in his role because so far, the Ravens win the games.
Jackson stated, “That’s how I always approached it. Before, we had a run-heavy offense. We had a lot of read-options going on. Now we’re throwing the ball down the field. Then we got Derrick Henry, a back that can go for 2,000 yards in a season. So, I probably won’t need to use my legs as much.” He further added, “Like I always say, if I get a lane, I’m trying to score. I’m not trying to run and go out of bounds to fall. If I have a chance to go, I’m going to go.”

Jackson has been considered the best running quarterback in the NFL since his rookie season. His dual-threat playstyle has often earned him comparisons to players such as Randall Cunningham and Michael Vick. The Ravens conclude their regular season schedule against AFC North rivals the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, January 5.
