It is indeed clobbering time.
The first trailer for Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” dropped Tuesday, giving fans a first look at the longtime superhero family from the comic books debuting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And things are very retrofuturistic, a nod to the Fantastic Four’s 1960s-era origins.
“First Steps” (in theaters July 25) follows a quartet of astronauts given extraordinary abilities courtesy of cosmic rays: super-stretchy leader Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), invisible woman Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), human torch Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and rock monster Ben Grimm, aka The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
“Whatever life throws at us, we’ll face it together. As a family,” Sue says in the trailer, which showcases each of the FF members in a peek at the adventure to come. That involves helpful robot H.E.R.B.I.E., the nifty Fantasticar and giant, planet-devouring villain Galactus (Ralph Ineson), who’s glimpsed setting his sights on New York City.

Directed by Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”), the new movie also stars Julia Garner (who plays Galactus’ sleek herald, the Silver Surfer), Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne and Sarah Niles.
The Fantastic Four first appeared in Marvel Comics in November 1961 and their popularity paved the way for Spider-Man, Iron Man, X-Men and the Avengers. “First Steps” is the fourth big-screen adaptation, following 2005’s “Fantastic Four” and its 2007 sequel “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” (both of which featured future Captain America Chris Evans as Johnny Storm) and a critically reviled 2015 reboot with Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan.
