When Ram Gopal Varma said he was mesmerised by Urmila Matondkar, made Rangeela only to capture her beauty: 'I couldn't accept her...'

Ram Gopal Varma and Urmila Matondkar have collaborated for some of the most memorable movies – right from ‘Rangeela‘, ‘Satya’, to ‘Jungle’ and ‘Bhoot’. Their actor-director collaborations have always remained quite iconic and one of the best ever in Indian cinema. However, it perhaps also came from the fact that RGV was mesmerised by Urmila’s beauty. The director had once confessed about it in his biography. It’s Urmila’s birthday today and let’s recall the time when Varma confessed to being smitten by her.
He had said in his biography, ‘Guns And Thighs‘ about how he was mesmerised by Urmila and how ‘Rangeela’ made her into the nation’s sex symbol. “One of my primary motives in making Rangeela was to capture Urmila’s beauty eternally on camera and to make it a benchmark for sex symbols. I would say that I have never felt more of a cinematic high than when I watched her through my camera on the sets of Rangeela.”
Varma had further confessed, “I don’t know how this may sound, but my biggest problem with Urmila on a personal front was that I just couldn’t accept her being an ordinary human being. I know that is a very unrealistic expectation from any woman but then you have to understand that I am a very filmy person. She was, in person, a simple sweetheart but I, very selfishly, always wanted her to be larger-than-life even in real life.”
A while ago, in an interview with Times Of India, Urmila said that she doesn’t agree to the fact that Varma took her in all his films, even though they did many movies together. “It’s not that I was in every movie that Ramuji made. I am sure he didn’t think that he would put me in every movie either.”
She had also spoken about Rangeela and added, “Rangeela made me a huge star and Satya made me unlearn that. When you have spent many years trying to become somebody and have to shed that status overnight to become a nobody, that was me in Satya.”
