G Kamalini‘s composed fifty and the spinners’ outstanding performance helped India defeat England by nine wickets in the ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup semifinal in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
India will now face South Africa in Sunday’s final. South Africa reached their first ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup final after defeating Australia by five wickets in the first semifinal.
Left-arm spinners Parunika Sisodia and Vaishnavi Sharma restricted England to 113 for eight. Sisodia took three wickets for 21 runs, while Sharma claimed three for 23.
India successfully chased the target, scoring 117 for one in 15 overs. Openers G Trisha scored 35 runs from 29 balls with five fours, while Kamalini remained unbeaten on 56 runs from 50 balls with eight fours.
Trisha started aggressively, scoring mainly through the ground in the ‘V’ region. India reached 44 without loss in the Power Play.
Kamalini survived a chance when England captain Abigale Norgrove dropped a catch off Amu Surenkumar’s bowling.
After Trisha’s dismissal by left-arm spinner Phoebe Brett, Kamalini partnered with Sanika Chalke. They added 47 runs for the second wicket, with Chalke scoring 11 runs.
Kamalini’s innings focused on placement and finding gaps rather than power hitting, leaving England’s bowlers struggling to contain her.
England’s innings began well, reaching 37 without loss in the fifth over before their momentum declined.
Jemima Spence was dismissed for 9 runs, beaten by Sisodia’s straight delivery while attempting a defensive shot.
“I bowled on the same spot and let the ball do the work. I bowled more to batters instead of doing single-wicket practice,” said player-of-the-match Sisodia.
“It helps me. I need a batter in front of me to try new things. The final is the wish and that’s the goal for all of us here,” she added.
Trudy Johnson was bowled by Sisodia while attempting a sweep shot. England then showed some stability in their innings.
Davina Perrin scored 45 runs from 40 balls with six fours and two sixes, while Norgrove made 30 runs from 25 balls with three fours and one six. They shared a 44-run partnership for the third wicket.
England’s innings deteriorated in the second half, scoring only 40 runs and losing six wickets in the final 10 overs.
Several England batters, including Norgrove, Perrin, Charlotte Stubbs, and Katie Jones, were dismissed playing sweep shots.
England lost three wickets in the 16th over. Stubbs, Prisha Thanawala, and Charlotte Lambert were dismissed in three consecutive deliveries, reducing England to 92 for eight.
The lower-order batters managed to take the team’s score past 100 runs in the final four overs, which proved insufficient for the match.
